Kurisumasu omedetou and Meerii Kurisumasu
メリークリスマス 😀

Answer by Chris
メーリークリスマス - “Meerii Kurisumasu” – Most Japanese will probably say this for Merry Christmas. Christmas is a western concept, and most people who are hip enough to celebrate it will probably say it in a western way. In Japan, western means American.

お正月おめでとう – “Oshougatsu Omedetou” – Oshougatsu is a virtual translation of “The new year”. “Omedetou” basically means “congratulations.” They say this in place of “happy” when discussing holidays. For instance, “Otanjoubi omedetou” means “happy birthday,” where “otanjoubi” means “birthday”, and “omedetou” means “congratulations.”

The Japanese word for “the” in this case would probably be “shi” (し). You could also say “to” (と), but where I lived in Japan, they probably would have said “shi”. So in full, the sentence would be:

メーリークリスマスしお正月おめでとう
“Meerii Kurisumasu shi Oshougatsu omedetou!”
