The most important skill a winger has to have is acceleration — the ability to get up to and through the gain line and its defenders as quickly as possible.
Ball handling never hurts, but you probably won’t need to do the long-crossfield offloads that are required of a scrum-half or fly-half.
You will also need decent kicking skills, because the winger is required to fall back and cover the #15 position when the full-back has launched a counter-attack of his own.
Answer by torcorn968If your on the wing your the guy who has to keep up, then when gets the ball, be able to sprint fast as your the last guy in the line, so unless your going for a try or you got tackled, you will have to dart into the pitch and pop it of to another player. Key is speed and stability.Answer by Brandon
Well, the other answers are ok but they are not quite on the bat. i play left wing for and under 17’s academy team and well Yes running is important. you have to be fast, but you don’t really need to be able to kick, as long as you can kick from your hands you will be fine. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO DO IS TACKLE!!! you will always be the last one on the line you need to be able to tackle the guy that is running at you at full pace, and believe me its hurts when he hits you with everything he has got. and no. throwing is not a necessity, most of the time if you are going to pass it it will be a short pass, or a scissors.
