A.j.: ~ Puzzle ~?
Ian and Adam wanted to go to Coney Island and were trying to figure out how they could get there the fastest. Ian wanted to take the subway, but Adam noted that the subway only gets halfway to Coney Island and then you have to walk the rest of the way. Adam said the fastest way to get there would be by bicycle but Ian still felt the subway would be faster so Adam hopped on his bicycle and Ian took the subway. The subway was four times as fast as Adam on his bicycle but Adam was twice as fast as Ian’s walking speed. Who got to Coney Island first?

Surely Ian will reach first.Answer by jimbob
Let’s say they were 16 miles from Coney.
In the time it took Ian to travel 8 miles on the subway, Adam rode his bike 2 miles. In the time it took Ian to walk the final 8 miles, Adam rode his bike 16 miles – meaning that Adam got there first.
Testing another case to be sure: 4 miles from Coney
Ian – 2 miles on subway; Adam – .5 mile on bike
Ian – 2 miles on foot; Adam – 4 miles on bike
Adam will get there first in every case
Answer by KookiemonLet’s say the distance is D. Adam’s walking speed is A. Ian’s speed on the bike is twice as fast as Adam walking, 2A. Adam’s speed on the train is four times as fast as Ian on the bike, 4I or 8A.
Since Ian travels the entire way on bike, we can represent the time it takes for him to travel a distance, D, by dividing it by twice Adam’s walking speed, 2A.
Ian = D/2A
Adam travels half the distance by subway, D/2, and travels at four times the speed of Ian which is eight times the speed of Adam walking, 8A, plus half the distance, D/2, at his normal walking speed, A.
Adam = (D/2)/8A + (D/2)/A
Adam = D/16A + D/2A
Adam = D/16A + 8D/16A
Adam = 9D/16A
[Ian = D/2A] < [Adam = 9D/16A]
Let's say the distance travelled was 10 miles and Adam walked at 2 miles per hour.
Ian = 10 miles / [2(2 mph)] = 10 miles / 4 mph = 2.5 hours
Adam = 9(10 miles) / [16 ( 2mph)] = 90 miles / 32mph = 2.8125 hours
So Ian will get to Coney Island faster.
Answer by mtoddgraggAdam, because no matter the distance, if the subway drops off Ian at the true midway point, then the time it takes Adam to bike from start to finish will be the amount of time it takes Ian to walk from the midpoint to the finish.Answer by JAY D
the bike dude couse he took the bike on the subway daAnswer by Akeja

Ian: { 40 mph 10 miles } + { 5 mph 10 miles }
Adam : { 10 mph 10 miles } + {10 mph 10 miles }
Ian probably got there faster unless Adam took his bike on the subway. However, there is no mention about the volume of people who were on the subway … was it excessively crowded … did they have to wait for the trains … did it take awhile to get to the proper train destination … did they stop and get a drink or use the restroom … these are all time killers that really make huge differences.
