Unless you know what you are doing, I wouldn’t suggest starting out with a parrot as your first bird, ESPECIALLY in an apartment. Parrots and Conures can be very loud, especially when they are not receiving enough attention. Would you be able to dedicate multiple hours a day to playing and interacting with your bird? If not, this is not the choice for you. A parrot that can speak words, let alone sentences, is a demanding pet, essentially like a child. They require a lot of dedicated training to even get them to start speaking. Plus, they are extremely expensive, especially when you figure in the cost of the cage and accommodations. If you are still set on getting a parrot regardless of all of this, please do your research before purchasing any bird.
If a parrot does not suit your current lifestyle, I would recommend a pair of budgies/parakeets. They can be very intelligent birds, and some of the males can even be taught to say simple words such as their names and “hello” or “pretty bird.” Plus, if you get a pair, they will have each other for company. If you want to train them, it will still require a lot of dedication, and again, please do your research before jumping into anything.
Best of luck. =)
Answer by SarahAfrican Grey. They’re the smartest parrot, they can talk very well. They’re not particularly noisy (nothing like conures, cockatoos or macaws) although they do talk a lot and they’re not too big. They do need a lot of attention though, so only get one if you have the time – without enough attention they can resort to feather mutilation! Good luck!
Just looking at the other answers – everyone is making it seem like it’s not a good idea for you to get a parrot. I assume you’ve done all the appropriate research so you do know what you are getting into. But I just wanted to let you know that I have a cockatoo and a conure and I love them so much. If you’re willing to put in the effort – they really are the best pets! Such a rewarding relationship.
Answer by krystalI use to want a parrot then one day i went to a pet store and saw a makaw and a few other big parrots and realized how big they where and got a little scared. so you may want to make sure you know how big the bird will be,or maby you will be just fine with what ever their size is unlike me.
But if you want a parrot that talks i think you should get an african grey. i have seen videos of thoes birds talking and they are very good at it.
Hop this helped 🙂
