art vandalay: On a job application they’re asking to specify computer hardware I have worked with?
I don’t really know what they mean by “computer hardware”, and I really don’t want to sound stupid. So please give me an example, and then I can fill in the blanks from there. Thanks! Oh, and they’re also asking for computer software, so if you could please tell me the difference between the two.

They are probably asking for make/manufacturer of computers you have used. E.g., Dell laptop or towers.

Software would be things such as operating systems (XP, Vista, Windows 7), applications (word, excel, etc.)

If they are specifically asking about hardware, I think they mean.. are you a PC, MAC or Linux user

Software they mean.. are you familiar with using word processors like Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint…

Basically they want an understanding of how savvy you are with computers.

It’s really hard to answer without knowing what type of job this is. The answers would be very different if it’s a network administrator position than if it’s a secretary position.

Answers to what “computer hardware” you’ve worked with could range from embedded Linux systems to Windows PCs, to Cisco routers or Mac laptops. Answer to what “computer software” you’ve worked with could range from Cisco IOS to Microsoft Word or from the bash shell to GNU GCC.

Hardware includes the computer, monitor, printer, scanner. etc.
Software is the programs such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint,etc), Windows Vista, XP, Windows 7.

Sounds like a badly written question on the application however.
I would most likely say what computers you have used i.e
Laptop
Desktop
Server
Main Frame
