Callum B: My sound card doesn’t work?
I have a Thinkpad R61 on Windows XP and unfortunately the sound card does not work, I have been on the website and downloaded the driver but when installing it an error message appears and say “The audio driver files do not support your computer hardware” could anyone please help me?
The sound has never worked and it’s not speakers because its a laptop and plus it’s service pack 2

Maybe the speakers are not working. I have a friend who thought there was something wrong with the sound card, but it turned out his speakers were dead.
By speakers I am talking about the two little speaker devices on the left and right side.
Maybe you have onboard sound. You need to download a diagnostic tool to tell you exactly which you have. I would recommend Belarc adviser. It gives your a detailed report of your computer. This is free software. Once you know, then you can search online for drivers.

If the audio is HD audio then Windows XP service pack 2 is needed before installing device drivers can be installed, obviously if you haven’t all ready got service pack 2!!!!
What your laptop does’nt have speakers?
Right click my computer, properties, hardware, device manager. Check if there’s a yellow ! beside your audio hardware, if so chances are the sound card is in perfect workin order, because windoes has recognised it. All it needs is the correct driver,as you say service pack 2 is installed if its HD audio.
You say the laptop is a Thinkpad R61? What type is it? should be 4 numbers? Have a look underneath
