GC: What can I do with any of these minors if I have a major in piano performance?
I hope to have a career in piano performance (specializing in classical), which is my passion. I am good at a few other things which I think may be good to fall back on in case my career doesn’t take off right away. These include: Computer Software Engineering (This was originally going to be my major with piano performance as the minor, but at the university I am attending, it is apparently very difficult to study arts and engineering because of credit hours conflicts. Actually, the only experience I have related to this is that I have passed a college-level computer science course in which I learned and utilized programming techniques such as arrays, polymorphism, and recursion with an A average and scored “qualified” on the exam, but I’m not sure what exactly “Computer Software Engineering” is and if it really interests me), Foreign Language (I have only studied Spanish, though I’d have no problem learning other languages), and Mathematics (I’ve studied up to Precalculus and understand it all well, and it can be fun at times). In all of this, I am not very interested in being a teacher (Though I guess that could change). Which is the most practical to choose and why? (Or should piano performance be the minor?)

Computer software engineering is almost certainly a better choice in terms of job opportunities than Spanish (there are millions upon millions of people who speak Spanish plus at least one other language), and is probably at least as good as mathematics. It is quite common to find first-rate amateur musicians among engineers, scientists, computer scientists, mathematicians, etc.; in fact, at Stanford (which I choose as an example because I know a fair amount about it because I earned a degree there, not for any other reason), the number of students from engineering and science participating in musical performances is second only to those from the music school.
