nothingspecial: maths?!?!?!?!?!?
nassim tinks of a number. When he multiples his number by 5 and subtracts 16 from the result, he gets the same answer when he adds 10 to this number and multiples the result by three, what is the number?
5x – 16 = (x + 10) * 3
please could you provide a method, thanks

Answer by IMAO
5x – 16 = (x + 10) * 3
Now solve for x.
Solution:
5x – 16 = 3x + 30
5x – 3x = 16 + 30
2x = 46
x = 23
5x-16 = 3(x+10)
5x-16=3x+30 By distribution
5x=3x+46 By the Additive Property of Equality
2x=46 By the Additive Property of Equality
x=23 By the Multiplicative Property of EqualityAnswer by singingrose21
Algebraic Equation: “x” represents the unknown term/number.
5x – 16 = 3(x+10)
First: eliminate parenthesis – use the Distribution Method.
5x – 16 = 3(x)+3(10)
5x – 16 = 3x+30
SEc: combine “like” terms – subtract 3x from both sides (when you move a term to the opposite side, always use the opposite sign).
5x -3x- 16 = 3x-3x+30
5x – 3x – 16 = 30
2x – 16 = 30 (add 16 with both sides).
2x – 16+16 = 30+16
2x = 30+16
2x = 46
Third: isolate “x” on one side (left) – divide both sides by 2.
2x/2 = (46)/2
x = (46)/2
x = 23
Expand it and solve:
5x-16 = (x+10)*3
5x -16 = 3x +30
group x on one side of the equation and the constant term on the other side and then divide to isolate x. That is your answer. You should be able to do that bit.
Answer by KemmyLet the number be x.
5x – 16 = 3(x+10)
5x – 16 = 3x + 30
5x – 3x = 30 + 16
2x = 46
x = 46/2
x = 23
let the number x
5x -16 = ( x + 10 ) 3
5x – 16 = 3x + 30
5x – 3x = 30+16
2x = 46
x = 23
the number is 23
5X-16=(X+10)3
5X-16=3X+30
5X-3X=30+16
2X=46
X=23
