It depends on the state. In FL, where I am getting married, I was surprised to learn they don’t require any, just the two of you and the person that marries you. Check the laws in your state.Answer by Eileen J
Good question, I am not sure . I guess it depends upon who you are asking..I would think most people have a witness, even if it is a stranger…But I would ask someone who knew the laws.I guess all places are different too. I know my brother had to ask a stranger that is why I would say ,better find out for sure.Answer by Luke
Nah its no legal at al, u need a valid witness for u to have a good wedding in the presents of someone who see u getting married in the first place.
Well hope this helps 🙂
Answer by Michael PI got married in Colorado, the only state where you don’t need a witness or an officiant. My wife and I basically hiked up into the mountains and married ourselves.
If you want a quiet ceremony and you can make the trip, I highly recommend it.
Edit: In Vermont you will need an officiant and one witness. See source. The witness needs to be with you when you apply for the license, but not necessarily at the ceremony.

Hi and congratulations!
Yes! According to this website, Vermont law does NOT require witnesses, so the marriage IS legal. Each state has their own laws. So, yes, it will be a legal marriage.
However, if you are marrying in a church…..the site also states the following:
“…if you are planning a religious ceremony, check to see if the religion’s tenets require witnesses.”
So, check with your church (if having a church ceremony), otherwise, NO you don’t need witnesses!
Answer by pspoptartIf you don’t have two witnesses over the age of 18 to sign the marriage license then most officiants won’t send it in so your marriage is not legal at least in Texas. States vary so Vermont may not require them.
If you have a marriage certificate your marriage is legal. If not, and you are considering another marriage you need to still check with the county where you were married and make sure the offciant didn’t file to paperwork to make it so. Otherwise you may be guilty of bigamy and get some serious hot water legally.
Answer by lilbluidevilno it’s not legal. you need a witness. I guess it depends on where you get married.
