OxyJay: What jobs are available to marines upon enlistment?
I’m considering joining the military and I’m meeting with a Marine recruiter. I’ve done some research on my own about the service but I’m having trouble finding an MOS. Most of the jobs seem like you have to change from another to get to it, so I’m just wondering what type of jobs are available right away?

all categories are open to guys right out of boot camp . choose a field first b/c you can’t specifically choose an MOS in the USMC. you just choose the general category. ex: you can’t choose to be 0311 rifleman, but you can choose the infantry field in hopes of getting your choice of rifleman.
hope that helps. don’t worry about looking at MOS’s until you take the ASVAB because that determines what you qualify for
Answer by DoggzillaLook under enlistment bonuses on about.com, as the list includes nearly every MOS you can enlist directly into. Its a very detailed list.
In general, there are three “tiers” to the asvab, you will most likely be in tier 2, which is below a 93 ASVAB. There are only a handful of jobs in all the services which require a Tier one, like being a nuke.
If you want to get technical, the jobs actually require specific individual test scores, like mechanical and clerical scores, which are called line scores. Each service has its own line scores. It doesnt matter if you get a perfect math score or whatever, if you dont make the minimums on all scores required, you cant get the job unless you retest and make it.
When you look up the MOS on about.com, they will show the minimum line scores, so look up which ones are required and study the general information. If you need more mechanical skills, pick up any car repair manual and learn the parts. If you need math, get a math for dummies book. Whatever the hell you need to learn, learn it. You do not want to get stuck with a job you dont like, you will be miserable, so make sure you get the scores you need for the job you want.
