Mike N: Is Yahoo mail always correct when it calls something spam and puts it in the spam folder?
Or should I look at the spam e-mail before I delete it. If I open the spam folder, am I opening the spam e-mail, or just the folder? I don’t want to expose my computer to viruses or even just a source of trashy e-mail.

No. Mistakes will always be made. You should always look in the folder and retrieve any mail you recognize. Opening the spam folder is not the same as opening the mail.
No, some legitimate mails have some markers that filters flag.
Newsletters commonly are classed as spam.
Just opening the folder isn`t a risk.
Opening the mails can be.
Also, some spam mail has code in it, flagging your account as active – triggering more spam sent to you.
Make sure that at all times you have an up-to-date anti-virus program (AVG and AVAST are good, and free for home use).

To open the spam folder, the page looks just like your inbox folder.
Youre not opening anything at that point.
Mail does go there and you shouldbriefly look at it about every other day.
Say if you sign up for something like Facebook. They will send you email but they are not on your contact list, so it might go to spam. Or your bank or other businesses/people not on your contact list.
