Mash: is submitting to web directories ok for SEO and backlink purposes?
Im submitting my site to quality, human reviewed web directories to help with backlink purposes and SEO. Is this an acceptable SEO building practise, and are web directories normally held in good repute so there will be no repurcussions from me doing this? I will only be submitting to high PR web directories and those that show quality.
Thanks in advance

It’s fine to do so, and I believe you need to a lot more. Backlinks from web directories is not sufficient for you to rank high in search engine (unless your keyword is not competitive at all).
p/s: Very importantly, On page SEO must be optimized first.

Answer by smallbizwebsites.orgBe careful. What you are calling “Web Directories” could actually be “Link Farms”, which Wikapedia defines as “… A link farm is a form of spamming the index of a search engine…” This WILL hurt you for two reasons:
1) Link farms are worthless sites, and therefore the links you get from them are worthless.
2) Google (et. al) know about link farms, and may penalize your site for having links from them.
If you want to know a good place to have your site listed, essential in fact, it’s the Open Directory Project (DMOZ). See the second link below.
Answer by SteveApart from web directories submissions, there can be many other activities to gain more backlinks like:
– Articles submissions,
– Social bookmarking
– Forums discussions
– Blog commenting
– Relevant site link exchange
These will surely help in gaining quality backlinks.
