Annie: Is it rude to add strangers on LinkedIN?
would it be rude of me to go around requesting add invites to absolute strangers on LinkedIn? Obviously, I’d be targeting people who work in companies that I want to work at…I figured they are on LinkedIn because they want to network..right?

LinkedIN is a resource you could use to meet people at companies you would like to work for but I would NEVER be so bold as to ask them to “vouch” for me or to write a letter or recommendation or anything like that. They could perhaps give you some pointers on what the company requires but if you meet someone who doesn’t want to give you any information then do not feel that you have the right to go back and talk to them anymore. LinkedIN is mainly used for professionals to meet up with OTHER professionals and to give them contacts within their business world. It WAS NOT set up for people to use as a way to get into companies. You should first apply at the company you are interested at working at because if you don’t and the person you contact through LinkedIN reports you in a negative way…your chances of then being hired are gone. I have a Brother who uses LinkedIN but he has worked for the company for many years and holds a high position and uses this as a vice to connect with other professionals like him. In all honesty….beware how you use this site…it has a double edged blade.
