Is it possible to become good at jazz dancing even if you start out late?

Lilly: Is it possible to become good at jazz dancing even if you start out late?
I just started jazz dancing and I’m not very flexible, but I was wondering if I could ever become better at jazz dancing and flexibility or if that’s something you are just good at or not?
Thanks!

Well, it depends on what prev. exp. you have in dance, and what type of commitment you intend to make to this activity.
When I started out at 30 /yo, I practised 3-4 times a week, for 1-2 hrs at a time, and worked on perfecting my splits, turns and kicks every day. That year I was voted as most improved student for that year.
As for making a professional career out of it?? Ask Karen Caine of the Royal Canadaian Ballet in Toronto (she was in her late teens when she first started ballet lessons).

Well, naturally some people just have God given talent, but like with anything else, the more you practice, the better you’ll get at it. Don’t let the fact that you’re starting out late deter you from working your hardest at it. And don’t forget to have fun with it too!

Answer by wanderklutz
Absolutely–as long as you maintain your commitment and focus, especially at the beginning (as it is always hardest when you START the training because your body isn’t used to it). It is not an impossible dream–you CAN do this, but you need to be committed, as flexibility and skill develop over time and practice. I think it’s great you’re dancing! Good luck!
