Chandu: is economics or management the best major to complement a degree in government?
Hi guys, I am defintely going to be a double major, and one of the majors is definitely going to be government. I can’t decide, though whether to get another major in economics or management . Can anyone help me out?

Definetely economics, because in management you will learn accounting and many other things that are strictly useful for businesses. Economics, specifically macroeconomics, will give you a huge boost in how the general economy works and will help you apply sound economic principles when implementing governmental policies.
I am a current major in economics and also work in a non-profit organization. Economics does provide some insight for the critical analysis of policy, etc.; however, it is incredibly theoretical, particularly at the higher levels. It is not particularly transferrable to careers other than economist. If you are interested in a government career, I would recommend the management course, and maybe take a few non-theoretical economics courses as electives. Also, the first year intro to economics course gives you a lot of the analytical skills without going too deep into the theory. The management skills will be directly transferrable into your work, and will likely open some doors if this is the route you are headed. Good luck!
