Economics is a great start.
There are two main types on wall street:
1) Insanely competitive and successful ‘movers and shakers’
2) Insanely smart super brains. (ie econ and math Ph.D.s)
Some guys with Ph.D.s in econ or mathematics work at the NYSE. and some “C” average competitive business men work there. What do you want to do in the NYSE? How familiar are you with that market? Can you handle large amounts of stress?
Everyone’s situation is so much different its hard to say exactly what would ‘qualify’ you for the NYSE. They don’t have an official minimum standard. The number one most difficult to acquire skill that is required in those high profile jobs is great business sense. You need to have a killer instinct in business or overwhelming intelligence or a combination of both.
If you’re serious about reaching your goals you need to start now by gaining experience that will set you apart and give you the opportunity to lead and prove to yourself that you can do it. Get a job at a bank or get a financial sales job (insurance mortgages real estate) If you can’t succeed in the high stakes sales position you may find it hard to succeed in the New York Stock Exchange.
I went the academic route. If you are planning on being an economic adviser you should plan on getting a Ph.D. in Economics. If you want do this you should double major in math and econ. Or at least major in econ and minor in math. (My path was the double major)
You dont technically NEED lots of math if your not going on to a Ph.D. (depending on your university) but it sure helps a ton. You have a wonderful opportunity to still be in high school. Get all nerdy an study math like a madman. Go out and buy some cheap college algebra books and get really good at your algebra…. really good. College calculus is NOTHING like high school calc so dont worry so much about that. Just get good at your algebra. You need really strong algebra skills.
Find little business to excel in that will show you if you have what it takes to move the big bucks.
