Lance: I made a garden bed in my yard one half is flowers other half is scallions and tomatoes will mulch hurt plants?
Will red mulch kill my garden plants???? I hear there good and bad let me know I have flowers too and onions and scallions growing the mulch is pulled away
so your telling me that only tomatoes and peppers will grow in red mulch beds?

I’m a backyard enthusiast not an expert but mulch shouldn’t hurt it. Mind you most red mulch is “cedar” and by cedar I mean it is pine or other such wood that is dyed red. We’ve been using red mulch for 15 years, no major problems there. Mulch is good to keep moisture in the ground on hot days, however I would be careful about mulching too deep around growing plants. You want their roots to grow deep into the soil and if you have a thick bed of mulch you might not get enough light and air down to the roots as they grow.
So my opinion is you should be fine….

If your soil is low on nitrogen, and
If your mulch is deep.
Then the mulch might remove nitrogen from the soil and make your plants grow poorly.

In general bark mulch is best on trees, shrubs and perennials.
Grass clippings and compost as mulch are best on annuals and veggies.

Personally, I hate plastic sheet mulch, but it is supposed to be good for veggies that like it hot like tomatoes and peppers.

I would not mulch the onions or scallions but I think it would be fine to mulch the flowers. Remember if you are mulching some mulches are artificially colored (such as red mulch) and you would not want to have that over something you are going to eat.
