I have already filed my taxes. Am I not entitled to the tax break congress just passed last week?

D M: I have already filed my taxes. Am I not entitled to the tax break congress just passed last week?
I filed my taxes in Mid-January. Last week conress announced that every tax paying adult will recieve $ 600 and $ 300 per child, in an attempt to avoid a recession. Since my taxes were already filed, am I not entitled to this extra tax break?

The stimulus is separate from your 2007 tax return. They actually need your 2007 tax return to be in the system to figure out what you will get if/when the checks are issued in June/July.

Actually it’s more likely to be $ 800 per person, $ 300 per child. It has nothing do do with your tax filing. You’ll get the money.

The Senate has yet to take up this issue and will likely muck it up by loading more and more pork onto the bill. Nothing is final yet, but as it stands if you reported earned income in excess of $ 3000 you will get at least $ 3000. If you reported $ 6000 or more you will get $ 600. Nothing to do but wait and see what happens in the Senate. It remains to be seen whether this is an out and out handout or a prebate of your 2008 taxes.

Only if you filed a tax return in 2007, reporting your 2006 wages and taxes.

Congress has NOT passed anything yet!

The House did act quickly on a bill but it is now mired down in debate in the Senate.

Once the Senate is done it has to go back to the House for further debate if the Senate approves anything other than the bill originally passed by the House.

If the House cannot agree to the Senate’s changes the bill goes into a joint committee to try to resolve any differences.

Then it goes back to the House for further debate and possibly a vote. Then it goes back to the Senate if the House passes on the modified bill.

If the Senate does not approve the modified bill then it will effectively be dead. It could go back to the House for further work but that’s unusual; few bills roll back and forth like that.

Expect this process to take days or weeks to complete. Until it’s finalized and signed into law it’s not possible to answer any questions on it’s content. Any opinions offered here are pure guesswork until it’s signed into law.
