georgiapeach: How to tell if a fundraiser is a scam or legitimate?
How does one tell if a cancer fundraiser in a local town is legitimate or just a scam? How can you find out where the money goes and how much? These people have fundraisers all the time and its not for a particular person. They say its for cancer society but they aren’t affiliated with them. I just want to find out how much goes to the cancer society if any at all.

If you have any doubts, don’t give anything to them. There is no law that says you must contribute to every fund raiser that comes along.
A good place to start is your local Better Business Bureau. Ask if they have received any complaints about the fundraisers. Then try to find your state’s laws regarding the reporting of charity fundraisers. To be on the safe side, you may wish to donate to a reputable organization like the American Cancer Society, and ask them if your donation can be earmarked to fund approved local charities. In fact, the ACS may also be a good source to find out whether the particular organization is on the level or has a high administrative cost.
