What does one need to do to become a tax preparer in Az. From what I understand there is no “certification”. Does that mean one can just take tax classes and then just do other peoples taxes from home based on what they know?

Check if AZ has any requirement. Check at AZ web site for Tax Preparers.
If AZ has no requirement, then you can start doing it. Go through IRS Publication 17: Your individual income tax.
Not sure what requirements AZ has. Right now for federal purposes you don’t need any certification, however that’s going to change with new proposed regulations that just came out. If you’re going to start up a business, be ready to have to pass a test maybe next year.
Please get more tax education than taking a couple classes before you start doing other peoples returns.
I watched auto mechanics fix my brakes a couple times. I could probably take them apart and get them back together, maybe even with no bolts left over, but I would be a fool to try it. And it would be even worse if did brake work for other people.
Just because it might look easy doesn’t mean it is. You can get yourself and your clients in deep doo doo.
