Oceanlvr: How to plan a halloween party?
So halloween is coming up soon … and I’m planning to have all of my friends over and throw a halloween party. How can I plan one that is fun, sophisticated, and totally memorable? What should we do at the party? What food should we serve? Any fun activities?
Thanks in advance.

Answer by Jimmeh!First of all decide on your budget, what are you willing to spend on the party? And how much of it will go towards food, drink, decorations, invitations, music, etc. You will also need to have some idea of the number of guests to work out your budget.
How are you going to invite people? You could phone them or just ask them when you see them or you could send out invitations either by hand, by post or by email. If you want to use invitations make sure they fit in the theme and feel of your party. www.evite.com and www.mypunchbowl.com have a good selection of invitations that you can send by email, you do have to sign up first but it’s quick, easy and free.
Now for the fun bit! The actual party!
Music
Your party playlist should tie in with the tone of your party, so if you want it to be really sophisticated steer clear of songs like Monster Mash etc! But if you think that your guests might really want to hear those songs maybe consider throwing a couple in. Make sure you incorporate everyones tastes in the playlist, not just your own, tempting as that may be!! Another thing to think about is how long the party will be and making sure you have enough music to fill the time. My halloween playlist has three sections, theme music/instrumentals for the start of the party when everyone is arriving which will set the mood but will be background music so everyone can chat and get settled. The next part is going to be halloween music to get everyone in a halloween mood and then the last bit will be just plain party music to get everyone dancing and singing along.
If you have spotify you can make a playlist and then, on the day of your party, you can buy a day pass which means you can listen for 24 hours without ads. It costs about the same as one song on itunes and you can listen to as many songs as you want so it saves a LOT of money. Not all songs are available but there’s a good selection.
you can download spotify for free at www.spotify.com
Decorations
Because I’m obsessed with this website I’m going to recommend www.marthastewart.com (click on holidays then either halloween central or halloween party workshop) There’s lots of good ideas for slightly more sophisticated decorations that you can make yourself. I’m going to have a different theme in each room, for example the bathroom is going to be sorta Psycho inspirted with blood all over the shower door, bloody handprints everywhere and I’m going to swap the regular lightbulb for a red one to give it an extra bloody/gory kick. In one of the downstairs rooms I’m thinking of doing a sort of frankenstiens lab theme with test tubes etc and green lightbulb. Coloured light bulbs are probably the cheapest and easiest way to make a room look and feel spookier and more halloweeny. If there are any rooms you’re not going to be using during the party you can still use them to your advantage, hook up an ipod to some speakers and play scary sound effects behind the door of the room so when people walk past they will hear clanking chains or wailing ghosts. If you want a sophisticated party I would advise you to either make your own decorations or to buy good quality ones instead of buying lots of cheap, plastic ones because they look like what they are – cheap.
Have a look at www.frightcatalog.com and www.lovemanor.com for inspiration. You could also make your garden into a graveyard by making gravestones out of styrofoam, if you search on google there are lots of tips on how to do this.
Food/Drink
If you want a sophisticated party, avoid scary looking food, think about making seasonal food like pumpkin soup or pumkin pie or something and maybe some halloween themed cupcakes. The halloween section of www.marthastewart.com has a good few recipe ideas and drinks ideas too.
I’ll stop rambling now, this has turned into a massive essay! lol hope you can find something in it that helps though, and i hope you have fun planning your party, good luck!!
xx
