Naturally, you would want Microsoft Excel, which will help with most of your math. You could probably get prism, which is a very decent statistics and graphing program. If you end up in web designing, dreamweaver is an impressive program I use.
Basically, anything with the name Adobe in front of it, Adobe suite, would probably help you if you get into it. I am sure video, pictures, and pdf files will all need to be worked with fairly extensively if you are going to work extensively with computers and computer programing.
Xampp is a free programing form creating virtual servers for web designing, PHP, and such, so that might be useful, and it is free to download.
I have also heard good things about Mathematica, and Matlab.
If these programs are too expensive for you, as a student, you may be able to get them cheaper. I know in Wisconsin, with a student email address, you can purchased all the best available software for sometimes 1/10th the price of it online, that’s usually $ 100 for a program that typically costs $ 1000. You might want to see what you state offers.
Other than that, I don’t know, I am not a computer programmer
