Tracy: How to do art on jigsaw puzzle mats?
I’m planning to use those jigsaw puzzle mats you find in elementary classrooms for a project. I liked the idea of connecting pieces. I wanted to put art on it either by means of spray painting, acrylic painting, gluing pictures, the whole nine yards…
Is this a good idea? I’ve never worked with this kind of media. Should I layer the mat with something before starting?
I just need suggestions on how to go about.

I think it matters a lot what the mats are made from.
If you’re talking about the mats that go on the floor and are already “puzzle pieces” to be fitted together for kids, those are likely some kind of rubbery stuff which may be hard to get things to stick to (paint, glues, etc), and also flexible if actually used.
You could perhaps check out some of the ways that play mats for kids or even “rugs” for adults/kids are created in large pieces of canvas for suggestions or ideas.
(If they’re the “puzzle mats” that people use to do jigsaw puzzles on, then roll up between sessions of working on them, not sure what you’re asking or wanting.)
If you’re interested in doing something arty with puzzle pieces though (purchased or making your own), there are various fun things you could do, but mostly in a smaller format:
