Advil: How much money should I spend on food in a month?
I just moved into an on campus school apartment with a kitchen (A KITCHEN!!!! FINALLY) I am trying to figure out a way to save money by cooking my own food and such. How much money would a person generally spend on food in a month. If I do my meal plan thing again that shit costs about 1,800 bucks a semester and I think thats kind of a lot. I don’t think food is that expensive.

My husband and I spend about $ 100 per week. We eat very healthfully which means very little in the way of prepackaged food. Half our cart is filled with veggies, the other half are meats, milk products, cereal and spices. Each night we prepare food for four. We eat two servings and the other two are for lunch the next day.
Back when we ate like 5 year olds we spent about $ 110 per week plus we ate out.
If you don’t already own pots, pans, small appliances, knives, plates and utensils you need to factor in those costs, too. To really save money by eating at home you need to be able to make a wide variety of meals (bored people waste more money eating out) and be able to master a wide variety of techniques. That’s not to say you need every uni-tasker on the planet but their are basics like a microwave, hand mixer, toaster, and perhaps food processor and blender that give you lots of recipe options. For pots you’ll need a sauce pan (or two), a skillet, and probably a dutch oven. A cookie sheet and pyrex baking dish are frequently used. You should have a butcher knife, a pairing knife, and another in-between sized knife. Cutting boards (you can get a cheap 4 pack at Target). Mixing bowls (at least 2). Plus anything you need to eat with. Those are the things that I use on a weekly basis.
Honestly, a meal plan may come out cheaper. Plus you’ll get lots more variety in food each week.
