Bri B: How much Credit history must you need to get a credit card?
I’m going to be traveling the country this summer and I need a credit card for emergencies. I’ve been applying to a few places and getting denied because of “insufficient credit history.” I’m only 23, and I’ve only had credit for 3 years, 6 months, that was when I bought my car, since then I’ve also gotten a store card to help build credit and bought a laptop on that. I have never missed a payment and would pay extra each month so that I paid both items off early. I checked out my credit report on annualcreditreport.com and I can’t figure out why I wouldn’t be able to get a credit card. I’ve been employed at the same place over 5 years, so on paper, I would think I am a model applicant.
So how much credit history do I need, I was always told 2 years, but clearly that isn’t enough!
I did apply to Capital One. And my bank is a small credit union, they don’t offer real credit cards. I would love to get a legitimate credit card through Capital One, or Chase (I was denied by both) without having to change banks, I’ve had an account at my current bank since I was born.

Every credit card issuer is going to have different criteria for how much credit history they would like to see before giving you a credit card. What types of cards are you trying to get? If you are applying for cards that offer points, cash back and other great incentives, those are usually earmarked for those people who have a longstanding credit history, make a decent amount of money etc.
Have you tried Capital One?
Answer by Sharon TGo talk to your bank and ask them to help expedite your application. They know how you have handled your bank account.
Stop applying elsewhere as that makes a negative difference.
