mollikah: How is myrtle beach for poor unmaterialistic folks?
I have the option this summer of living in Myrtle Beach, and it sounds pretty fun being in a lively enviornment and being close to cities like DC and boston (I live in the midwest) but from what I’ve heard it kind of seems like a playground for rich folks. Is there much to do for a girl who isn’t into shoes, amusement parks, or spending $ 7 a beer?

well i deffinetley perfer the outer banks in north carolinia to myrtle beach, but its not that bad traffic can be a real killer though especailly on the weekend in the summer, if you like the beach hell you can stay there all day, thats what i do, most beach town/vacation towns only have touresty atractions and once you’ve seen one you have seen em alll, i would go for the offer, liveing at the beach for the summeris probably a once in a lifetime oppurtunity, i would take it

MBSC is far from a playground for the rich – it’s known as The Redneck Riviera and that’s far from “rich folk”.
In fact, most people here (who live here) earn between $ 7-10 an hour and work their tail off in the hospitality and retail industries with no hope of ever being “rich”. There are “working class” and “professional class” and not much in the middle.
To do? Mostly people come here to go to the beach. It doesn’t cost anything to go to the beach and lounge around all day. There are plenty of things to do that don’t cost major bucks – I usually pay less than a few $ for a beer and more than a few girls I’ve met here pay nothing for a beer (they use my money). ☺
Being close to DC and Boston? There’s not an interstate here. Washington DC is a 7 hour drive and Boston is 14 hours. Atlanta is 5.5 hours and Charlotte is about 4.
Close by is Wilmington NC and Charleston SC – Columbia SC isn’t too bad. Washington and Boston are cheaper to fly to from here.
All of that said, I like it here a lot. I’m not leaving any time soon. Best cost of living of any of the many places I’ve been and there’s plenty to do that costs nothing.
