They are the social trend.
First of all, many teenagers work so they affect the economy by being an earner. In turn, they usually pay taxes on their income. Many teenagers are in a line of work that supports consumerism, such as retail or the food industry.
Apart from work and direct consumerism, teenagers influence what their parents buy. Even if, and especially, if the teen doesn’t purchase anything, their parents spend money on their children and therefore they indirectly affect the economy through their parents’ spending habits. This includes not only tangible things such as clothes, shoes, and food, but also services such as cellphone plans.
Because teenagers are so influential over purchases, a great deal of advertising is directed specifically at them. This is not only in the form of television and radio ads but also includes magazines, movie previews, and perhaps most importantly: the internet.
The amount of money involved in advertising in its many forms has a huge effect on the economy. Not only is this evident in the fact that money is exchanging hands from companies to the medias that present the advertising, the number of jobs that the advertising world creates is huge and therefore also has a large impact on the economy.
Hope this helps!
