Bubba: How do you tattoo a rabbit with an electric tattoo pen?
I’ve used the old fashioned method with the plier type tattoo kit and finally bought an electric tattoo pen because it seems that’s what most breeders are using and most of the rabbits I have bought with a tattoo from an electric tattooer have all been better quality tattoos than most from the clamp style. I tried doing three rabbits tonight both by myself and with help. We tried holding them every which way and trying wrapping them in a towel and still couldn’t get them to sit still enough to get anywhere near a decent tattoo in their ear. Any ideas/suggestions? I would have needed a couple new sets of numbers and a new set of letters to continue to use the clamp style and just those from TSC cost the same as the electric tattoo pen so I got the pen and would really like to get it to work. I practiced with it on a grapefruit so I have a feel for the pen and such just getting to actually tattoo the rabbit without them moving all over is my issue.
PLEASE NOTE: these are show rabbits, so the must be tattooed. I’m not looking for answers about how inhumain it is or how I shouldn’t be doing it. People have been showing and tattooing rabbits since at least the early 50’s if not longer and millions of rabbits have gone through it. So PETA people need not reply.
as a reply to having someone come and tattoo on my foot. Come on over. I already have 2 tattoos myself and wouldn’t mind another one lol
MJF. good point I was just seeing if there wa a breeder on here who used one them selves because I have a white bunny I need to tattoo for a show tomorrow and didn’t wanna attempt to tattoo him without some more insite so I didn’t end up turning him the color of the ink. That and if I tattooed him tonight I could have his ear cleaned out by tomorrow for the show.

Why don’t you ask someone you know who also tattoos their rabbits and who can SHOW you how to do it? Wouldn’t that be more sensible than asking complete strangers to make unqualified quesses and vague written descriptions of the tattoo process??
Take your tattoo pen to the show with you and make big, sad eyes until someone takes pity on you and shows you how to use it. 🙂 I’m sure someone would be happy to help you. There are also videos on youtube, I believe. It does take more practice to learn how to restrain the rabbit well than to use the tattoer. When you wrap the rabbit up, remember that they usually try to back up to get away.
