How do you “start” a plant with a plant clipping?

IvoryPixie: How do you “start” a plant with a plant clipping?
The plant lady at work gave me this really good start from a vine type plant. I think it’s called a philla…something. I tried to tell her I’ve got a “black” thumb and I’m not good w/ plants but she said it’s a very common house plant and anyone could grow it. I put the ends in water just like she said, but it’s not sprouting roots like she said it would.

try putting a little sugar in the water. Not a lot, just maybe a pinch. As long as the start is still green, it’s still growing. Give it a few weeks. If it’s not brittle and brown, it’ll grow roots.

it takes time for the roots to start budding just keep it in the water till it does

Put the cutting in a jar full of water…..with the stem in the water. Place it in a window ledge where it will recieve good sunlight. It will start rooting….and will even grow in the water. Once there is a good root structure established you can transplant into potting soil.
