Emily W: How do you go about buying a mobile home?
My husband and I can’t afford much but it would be nice if we could have a little place we could call our own. So we were looking at buying a double wide. Just a as a little starter home. The thing is we know nothing about how to go about buying a home. So my question is, for a mobile home how much should we have saved up to be as a down payment? How good should our credit be? And how much does it cost to move a double wide?

first you need the land to place the home. Then a foundation, septic, well, power must be brought in. It would be much cheaper if you looked at a mobile home park, the rent of the space is a few hundred a month. A double wide will cost you around 85k.
Well if you’re planning on moving the home onto undeveloped land, I would contact one of the large manufactures, since they offer packages that include brickwork, driveway, etc. Last time I checked a really nice one went for 70K.
If you’re planning to move into a park, contact a real estate agent and ask all the questions you can. Usually 10-15% is fine, and depending on the area, it’s a pretty good deal. Normally the rent and mortgage equals less than you would pay for a 3/2 apartment. Plus the manufactured newer homes are beautiful.
