Bob Dylawn: How do you feel about celebrities telling us to be more environmentally friendly?
I Seen a commercial the other day that had these celebrities telling us we need to stop global warming. It really got me mad because these people are probably some of the biggest energy users and consumers on planet earth. How does it make you feel?

It makes me feel like they are hypocrites. They are only doing the commercials to make it seem like they are sooo concerned about it.

It’s a dilemma.

Rich people do consume more resources. How could they not?

But celebrities are good for getting ordinary people to hear environmental stuff they wouldn’t otherwise.

So, while I understand your frustration, I think this is, on balance, a good thing.

It would be nice if all of them worked harder at being a good example, but that’s like asking professional athletes to be good role models for kids. Some are, but most have other priorities.

I really don’t pay much attention to them. They’re there for two main reasons. It make them look good to the public eye and organizations tend to think that people respect their opinions (which may be true to some extent).
Besides that, I can’t think of other reasons. After all, none of them have real knowledge about what they’re talking about. The same way they didn’t know about refrigerators, cars or toothpaste when they were paid to endorse them. In fact they didn’t even really had to use the product to endorse it.

From my point of view, it doesn’t make sense. It’s like taking a poor performance politicians and put him to talk about global warming. What does he knows about it? Let’s say that you pick one who was in office and did nothing about that issue throughout all his term. Better yet, one that didn’t even showed up as a reference for any other issue. And all of a sudden it’s presented to the general public as the flag bearer of a very sensitive issue. Would you trust him? Do you think it would be logical to even listen to him?
But it could happen…

I think it is very fitting, celebrities or at least actors make their living in the world of make believe, so spreading the word about AGW should make them feel right at home, reading from the script of a fictional story, commonly known as the IPCC V4.

If celebrities weren’t typically socialists, I doubt that Bob would be so inclined to have them speak out. I remember hearing Brad Pit was asked about global warming probably a decade ago and he got mad at the journalist and said something like, “I am an actor. Why would you ask me something like that?” I liked him for a while until he forgot he previous humility. Too often, idiots like Leo DeCRAPio will pretend to a scientific geniuses and all he does is spread mistruths and propaganda. It is harmful. How can spreading lies and distortion be good?

We should all listen to what celebrities and politicians tell us because they only say these things for our own good.

F them is right! who the heck are they to tell us to do anything, they are the ones with the millions of dollars, NOT contruibuting it to the universe and or humanity, they can all go to H E double hockey stick!

i think they are hypocrite’s, are they being environmental friendly when they take their private jet to the Maldives instead of just going first class on a plane with other people to cut the admissions. or when they have expensive products shipped to them, like on the MTV show The Fabulous Life of…
they say Britney sends a jet for coffee from a special place and Cameron Dias gets Evan water shipped just to wash her face. i don’t know how true this is but if they do it ridiculous on the environment.

If they use some of their money to lower their carbon footprint by i.e. install solar panels, drive hybrid cars and to some extent also for sponsoring environmental friendly projects then I think they are setting a good example. If they just tell the rest of the world what to do without doing anything or very little them selves, then they are hypocrites.

Some environmental friendly products are unfortunately very costly since they still aren’t mass produced. The only persons who can, and should buy them are rich people, like celebrities. That way they can help to drive this development forward. I don’t object people being rich at all, but after all, it’s inevitable that people who consumes the most also have the largest footprints. This is their chance to do something about it.

I would guess that many of them are doing it to make themselves feel good or because their agent or management company has told them to. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them couldn’t even spell globle worming.

Undoubtedly there are some that do genuinely care and are making a difference but do we really need to hear all about it?

The one thing it does is to get a message across to a wider audience. It’s unfortunate but people are more likely to listen to Leonardo DiCaprio, Sheryl Crow, Cate Blanchett etc than they are to a scientist who actually knows what’s going on.

How does it make me feel? Not bothered in the slightest, never paid them much heed, prefer to get my info from first-hand, reliable sources.

I think that they should tell us to use as much gas as we can and eat all the endangered critters. We rule the earth, it’s time for that to be known!

I admire people who use what resources they have–including celebrity status–to try to make the world a better place.

There are always jerks around who attack celebrities who do this. Such people are jsut trying to make themselves look “cool”–but all they really do is show that tehy are petty, small-minded losers.

i agree that celebs are probably the biggest energy users. they buy the expensive cars, clothes and even drugs. hypocrites shouldnt be looked up to as role models.
