In Group 1A, these are the alkali metals. In Group II, these are the alkaline earth metals. In Groups IIIB, IVB, VB, VB, VIB, VIIB, VIII, IB, and IIB, these are the tranition metals. Group VA, these are the pnictogens. They take their name from the Greek word, pnictein, “to choke” or “to suffocate.” Group VIA are the chalcogens. They take their name from the Greek, meaning bronze-formers. The sulfides, selenides and tellurides of the transition metals glisten like metals. Group VIIA are the halogens, “salt-formers:” fluorides, chlorides, bromides, iodides.
