ashlauwer: How do you claim someone as your dependent – a sister?
How would you claim a sister as a dependent (only have one sister)? Father’s health is declining and for the best interest, it would be best to claim her. How would i go about this and how long would it take for the paper work to register? Thanks for the help!

There’s not paperwork to register – you just claim her on your tax return if you are eligible to claim her.
If she lives with you over half the year, and does not provide over half of her own support, and is under age 19 (or under 24 and a full time student) and a parent isn’t claiming her, you can.
Answer by shoredude2There is no paperwork to register. As long as you meet the necessary requirements, you just enter her name and social security number on your tax return. As long as no one else has claimed her, there is usally not a problem. The IRS may send you a form if she qualifies you for EIC to show that you legally have met the requirements.Answer by efflandt
In order to claim her as a qualifying relative, her gross income for the year would have to be under $ 3400.00 and you would have to provide more than 50% of her support.
There are other tests to see if she is a qualifying child, including living with you, age, full time student, etc.
