Mandi: How do I train my horse/pony to turn left or right by halter use and bareback?
I have Welsh pony and he a little stubborn i never put the bridle on him and he never really listens to me anyway. I only use halter and ride bareback. And when no one is leading him and i’m just sitting on him he’ll trot back up the hill and i’m not ready for trotting yet. What do I do?

This was a very poorly worded question. Just put a bridle on and it will be a lot easier if he was ever bridle trained. Good luck!
Well you should definitely get him working in the bridle and saddle anyway. If not, he’ll think he’s the boss, and he will be. You are not controlling him, he’s controlling you! Make sure you can get him to stop, and when you want him to. Get him to realize what leg pressure is, and that when you pull on one rein it means to go that way (left rein pull=turn left, right=right) and then when he gets all that, go back to bareback, clip your lead on one side of the halter and tie it on the other, and go. If he takes off with you, pull a one rein stop (pull one rein until he turns in a circle), and get him to stop. Then proceed to do whatever you like with him. If he acts up even more, I would suggest lunging him first.Answer by bob and dolly k
you have to make him do what you want him to and not let him get by
with things you don’t want him to. you have to be consistent. you might
need to put him on a bit till you get him trained. i rode my horse bareback
with a hackamore and she was fine. the way horses are trained is with pressure. horses don’t like pressure so where ever you apply pressure
they will move the opposite way. if you squeeze in on the horse with
your right foot he is going to move away from it and go left. if you squeeze
with your left foot he will go right. when ever he won’t do what you want
squeeze both feet into his sides hard and pull back on the reins and make him back up. and do that every time he messes up without fail
he will get tired of backing up all the time and mind you. if you bring
him down a hill, how steep is it? when you ride him back up it might
be to hard for him to do it in a walk. he might break in to a little trot
to make it up the hill. if your not comfortable with him in a trot and the hill is to steep for him to walk up it don’t take him down the hill.
