handyd: How do i “seal” a fiberglass backboard?
I just bought a used fiberglass backboard and it has degraded to the point that it is “shedding” fiberglass.I am pretty sure I can just spray on a clear varnish of some type, but would like to know EXACTLY what is best to use.Viewed from the side, you can see the fiberglass fibers. Thanks all!

Fiberglass resin.
I would use something that is made for the exterior and very tough. I think exterior oil based polyurethane finish with white pigment added my be ideal.Answer by Duane
sand lightly and a couple layers of clear spray paintAnswer by Someoneelse
You will need to sand and paint the affected areas. Do not use clear because the resin in your backboard is not UV resistant. The original surface on your bb was UV resistant gelcoat with the structural interior a polyester resin with fiberglass and I’m assuming a wooden core. If your BB is not real heavy, it could be a honeycomb core. Regardless, if the resin is showing, it will continue to degrade untill it is protected from UV rays. There are only two colors on a backboard so if you can’t find a perfect color match for the orange or the white, scuff the entire surface with scotchbrite, 100 grit sandpaper, or even steel wool and mask and repaint the entire board with the color you have. That would look better than mismatched colors.
