How do I file taxes for money I made in Idaho, if I reside in California?

Product Researcher: How do I file taxes for money I made in Idaho, if I reside in California?
I am completing a 3 month internship in Idaho, but will return to California upon completion. What is the best way to file taxes? Idaho’s state taxes are actually higher than Cali, so I would like to avoid them. Someone else mentioned they are just having their taxes withheld by their originating state, Is this possible? Of course, I would like to have the least taxes taken out, so if there is anyway I can pay only California taxes on the money I would love to know how?

My fiance is fairly familiar with this situation since he travels to and works in other states even though his permanent residence is in California and from what has happened with him in the past, you will more than likely have to pay taxes in BOTH states and even though Idaho has a higher state tax, you’ll still more than likely being paying more state tax for California.

You file two state returns (Idaho and California). You will be a resident of California and a Non Resident of Idaho. You will pay tax on the income for both states and get a credit in California for the taxes paid in Idaho.

Does Cal. have a reciprocal agreement with ID? In Ill, we have reciprocal agreements with most of our surrounding states. Under these, an Ill. res. only has Ill tax withheld and vice versa.

Check and see if Ca has a foreign tax credit whereby you claim credit against your Ca tax for taxes pd on the same income to Id.

If you are referring to the mechanics of filing, Idaho doubtless has a website for its Revenue Dept where you can download forms and instructions.

You do not have to file two state returns. Since CA is your home of residence when you file your federal taxes and state taxes there will be a question asking you if you made any income outside of the state that you reside in. You of course say yes and go from there.
