How do I “delegate” work to a volunteer?

Chip C: How do I “delegate” work to a volunteer?
Sometimes I work with a non-profit. We have many volunteers come in to help us. They have varying degrees of energy. How do I “delegate” work to them without having them feel as if I am treating them as if this is their job instead of something they are doing out of the goodness or their hearts?

say it with a smile, allow them to provide feedback, offer them options (if this is possible); unfortunately all you can really do is utilize your leadership skills and make them feel inclusive to the process. also let them know that they are appreciated no matter what and keep them focused on the not for profit’s mission, not the specific job at hand
