Ed Y: How do hotels keep shower water temperatures stable?
I’ve recently been to a few hotels while traveling and started to wonder how they keep their showers from fluctuating in temperature and pressure. At home, if anybody turns on or off faucets around the house, the showers at my house would change in temperature and pressure. How do hotels manage to prevent the effect of others taking showers or using other water appliances from affecting my own room? Are there any solutions in hardware stores for the home owner?

hotels use a pump to increase and maintain water pressure, once the building pressure falls below a certain point the pump comes on and pressurizes a tank, and by pressurizing the tank, the pump can shut off for periods of time until the tank pressure falls to a certain point then the pump comes on and builds pressure once again. and in high usage scenarios, the pump will stay on. and this will also aid in constant temp, because in your home, if you are taking a shower and someone turns on the hot water, you will notice a temp change because the pressure in you house isnt able to sustain 2 or more appliances without creating a large drop in pressure in the pipes.

the only way i can tell you too do the thing you need done it’s tearing out all of the plumbing and replace it the right way all your main line should be at least 3/4″ pipe and each fixture that is tapped off the main line should be 1/2″. the bigger the main line, the less the pressure drops when any fixture is turned on

They use a pressure regulating anti Scald mixing valve like these:

I have installed them in my home and we can flush a toilet while someone is showering and you can hardly tell.

My bride of 17 years is pretty good at sweating copper pipe joints. It took use 2 hours to do the first one and about 1.25 hours to do the second.

All shower valves have to be anti-scald. That is the law. The pressure is regulated by a metering valve built into the show valve.
