There had been casino gambling for quite a while (since 1931) but it was just little western cowboy themed holes in the wall until the late 1940s. The Flamingo was the first big stylish casino on what is now the strip. Others soon followed, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Answer by banananose_89117There has always been some form of gambling when Vegas was just a stop on the train to LA. However, in 1931 it became legal in NV to gamble. The change in what Vegas is today began when Howard Hughes moved to the Desert Inn and started buying up anything and everything he could. He drove out the “mob” and began the corporation era. As corporations took over the town it became what it is today.
