Dauber: How can I start a fox petting zoo?
I would like to buy a bunch of foxes, really rile them up everyday and build a petting zoo in my yard for them. This way I can rent out my backyard as a children’s petting zoo, let the kids go in the pit with the nice cuddly foxes. Does anyone know where I can obtain a whole gaggle of foxes?

Hmm…well, I want to let you know I wanted to do the same thing- but I realized it wouldn’t be a good idea. . . For multiple reasons, but I guess I’ll just state the biggest one: Even if you have the most tame foxes, if they happen to bite one of those children (is often bound to happen some time…), your fox will have to be put down (to check if it has rabies; they don’t care if it’s had rabies vaccination, or if it couldn’t come in contact with it- they’re going to do it anyway), then you’re going to be filed with charges of some-sort, probably have to end up paying a large fine….then the media often likes to blow-up situations like that, and then everyone would freak out about the incident, and then end up forcing you to shut down. . .
Soo…it’s not the best idea, even though I’d Love to see it happen (someone open a fox petting zoo- NOT some girl/boy getting bit and bad things happen.)
But, if you Are interested in getting lots of foxes…and maybe having it open just to specific people whom you know won’t file charges or something, and not open to the public – I don’t think there are many place you could buy a whole lot of foxes (unless you discovered a fur farm that doesn’t want to do business anymore, or is a really big one with many many foxes each year…), so, I suggest you get a few from a breeder near you at a time- and raise them each personally. …If you get them all at once- they’re just going to raise each-other and have super-unfriendly foxes…. It’s best to have them bottle fed, and if not, then at least have them be around you all the time when they’re young and trained by you- instead of their siblings. (I know of people who’ve done that, and that one of her three foxes is very shy, won’t go near people…and if someone chased it to try to pet it, I don’t think it would work out too well…)
There are many fox breeders out there- you’ll just have to find them. …I’d help you, but I don’t know your state- and it’s best/easier to locate one within your state.
And I also want to let you know that the laws are different for each state, and sometimes different for the region (it could be perfectly legal with the state, but then the county may have some weird rule banning them or something…), so you should look into that before you get any as well.
If you have any questions on foxes, feel free to contact me, and I’m sure I can get you some kind of answer from me or someone else.
Good luck!
