Hi, I have two desktops and one modem, so how can I connect my second desktop to that one modem.

Buy a router.

Yes you need a router. I would recommend a Linksys WRT54G. Its by far the most common router and will do everything you need and more. Its also a wireless router so if you have Wifi devices such as laptops or cell phone/PDAs they can connect as well.
