First of all, what type of guitar do you wish to learn?. You can get free lessons through Gibson.com, Ultimate-guitar.com, and a great fellow named John Stockwell of australianguitarlessons.com, he will send you free video lessons every week.

I recommend starting out with at least a dozen lessons from a good teacher. With guitar, if you don’t get your fundamentals right at the outset, you will limit your potential and you risk developing repetitive motion injuries. A teacher is necessary because s/he can observe your wrist and finger position and correct it on the spot–you won’t be likely to notice the little mistakes that can turn into huge bad habits.

After your fundamentals are right, you can go with self-teaching if you don’t mind it taking a bit longer. Get a lot of materials–I’d suggest shopping for books and videos at used shops or on ebay–and practice the ones that seem to work for you, resell the ones that don’t, and store the ones that are too advanced until you catch up to them.

Final tip for you; practice plan. At the outset, try to practice many times daily for no more than 10 minutes at a time. Frequent short practices yield faster improvement for the beginner, and they also reduce the likelihood of tendinits and blisters. Build up your playing time slowly, by a couple of minutes per week, and eventually drop the number of practices. Finally you’ll be up to playing for a full hour or more, and you’l probably be down to a single practice session daily.

I am teaching myself to 🙂
i went to my local music store
and picked up acoustic guitar books
2 of them
1st being beginner guitar owners must no handbook
and 2nd being one with learning notes and strings and so forth

i also go on you tube and type in things like
how to play breath me by sia
usualy something comes up 🙂
and youv learnt a song in 5 minutes 🙂

I’m doing that right now! You can go to the local music store and get a guitar book for beginners. then just follow the instructions! It takes a lot longer though if you don’t have a teacher.
