cleoman: If finances as we know it disappeared, would the Human Race disappear, or only Wall Street? Part 2?
Thanks to wayfaroutthere’s answer, in part, “Do you realize how long money has been around? It’s ancient. Stock trading and such could go away, but you can’t get rid of finance unless everyone is self sufficient. In fact, I don’t even think it would be possible to get rid of the idea of compound interest. Anyplace there is money there are people who need to borrow it, and no reason to loan it out for free.”
So, the question then is, “Do we need a stock market?”

yes. scenario w/o stockmarket: you decide to invest your money in XYZ company. that company’s board of directors (that you as a shareholder help elect) decides not to declare any dividend and reinvest profits. now you think you should sell your stock cause you aren’t recieving dividends. what do you do? you put an ad in the newspaper, craigslist, ect. saying:
“1000 shares of XYZ company for sale, $ 100/share or best offer”
instead of just calling your broker and saying “sell 1000 shares of XYZ at market” (or sell 1000 limit order $ 100, ect)
