pistons56: Do you think soccer will have a good chance at taking interest away from basketball?
I think soccer has a good chance of taking interest away from basketball in America. I don’t understand why Major League Soccer doesn’t attack basketball. First of all, basketball requires you to be very tall to be successful at it. Why not go after young kids with a promotion that you don’t have to be a giant to be a success in that sport? That way, you have more kids playing soccer, watching the games and buying the merchandise.

It may, but not in the near future. You have to look at what all the sports in the US have in common. They all originated here, and the leagues here are the best in the world. Americans don’t want to have a secondary league, such as the MLS. They want to have the best, like the spanish or the premeirship. I am a huge soccer fan, and I would love to see the MLS flourish in this country. Will the arrival of Beckham and Blanco, more people here have been bgining to take notice. But lets not get too exited about it taking over basketball at this point in time.

first of all MLS cannot attack the NBA… because the season is over by the time the NBA starts and when the MLS season starts its the NBA playoffs….. so there best shot is against baseball……but if the MLS made the right moves it could overtake baseball and basketball in America…. baseball is watched by mostly Yankee and Red Soxs fans the rest of America doesn’t really care and most youngsters find the sport boring…..The NBA is full of giants…and most people just dont relate to the sport…there is no more Jordan so the hardcore fans only remain….
The MLS can start by holding its season like the Europeans…from September to April……that way u dont have players running around in hundred degree heat all summer, and the level of play will improve dramatically….than u get rid of all the American football stadiums they play in and get a real soccer pitch… the fans will appreciate it more…. because the game is so ugly when it is watched with all those yard lines and end zones…..and finally….increase the sallery cap for some real players….2 million is the sallery cap…and having only 2 designated players isnt going to change much on the field except sell out a few games………chances are they wont do any of the things i said…..so i will go back to watching Man U and RONALDO….

first of all, you don’t have lots of commercial spots for the advertisers during a soccer game. that’s a big no-no for the american market.
baseball – 16-17 commercial slots for each change over. not counting pitchers changes
basketball – officials timeout and 6 time outs for each time. you are looking at 16-18 slots with 4 quarters break time added in.
football – omg….commercial spot open on every 4th down not to mention time outs and 4 quarters break time.
so basically, every baseball, basketball, or football game you see in front of tv, you will also watch at least 40 mins of commercials. in soccer, you have a 15-20 min half time, which we can all walk away to the kitchen or take a shower or something. advertisers know we aren’t staying around to see their commercials.
less commercials mean less money for the league and the tv networks and the players.
advertisers decides which sports to be popular. even if usa national soccer team wins every World Cup from now on(certainly a fantasy), soccer won’t be popular until the advertisers can think of a way to put in more commerical spots.

It already does. Nobody watches basketball anymore. Soccer even gets as much TV time as basketball now.
