anonymousgirl: Do you think that literature for young teens are nonexistent today?
There are many shelves lined with novels about sex, rich girls, private boarding schools, typical romance, fantasy, and competition in the young adult section in the bookstores. An example would be “Gossip Girls” or the “It Girls” series. Do teens today like to read those novels? If so, why do you find them appealing? Does anyone write anything worth reading anymore? In my opinion, I would love to read something written by classic authors in the late 19th or early 20th century era in the young adult section.

I love reading books like Twilight, and the Private Series, & also Gossip Girl. But I am also reading Jane Eyre, and I am interested in that as well. :] Some books are worth reading, others are not. But I think that some today still have quality.
Well im 15 and I don’t read those types of books. I read stuff by Michael Crichton or Tom Clansey. Or AutobiographysAnswer by Miguel D
Nonsense. An easy example of literature for young teens was the recent “Series of Unfortunate Events” books. However, if you’re looking for older young teen stuff do try reading “Up a Road Slowly” by Irene Hunt.Answer by Nature&Book Freak<3!
I personally hate those kinds of books, and I just turned 14, and am a girl.
I like inspiring books, or mystery/fantasy/a little bit of romance.
I like Maximum Ride, Twilight Series type books.
And random books about people who lived through rough times.
But I personally hate all those books that are centered around sex/romance and boyfriend stealing.
They just don’t interest me at all.

Answer by nanyi’m a teen and i can tell you that i dont really like gossip girl or the it girl that much. i got to like the 4th book in gossip girl and i was like egh.
there are a few good books in the young adult section though.
but you have a point. it would be nice if there was more of a variety to choose from. whenever i go its always the same thing over and over again: sex, drugs, rich girls, and all that. it gets a little boring.
im waiting for my dad to take me to borders or something so i could buy alot of old books. i dont know why but for some reason i just feel like reading them.
but also, i do enjoy many of the books that are in the young adult section. like sarah dessen. i really like her books. and theres just alot more, but if i were to name them all, i’d name you the entire store. lol
Answer by edenthothly666I had this problem a few years ago trying to get kids into my after school reading program. When one girl told me she wanted to read the Princess Diaries I cringed. Then I did some hard core thinking.
When I was in high school, what did people read? Nothing was my honest answer. I did a myspace search and found
“Favorite Book?” what the f###’s a book?
Two things I decided.
1. You have to start somewhere. My first chapter book was the Boxcar Children.
2. Its getting better thanks to these monstosities. Written words are better than text messaging!
No.
There are tons of YA authors.
Answer by hazel eyesI’m a seventeen year old girl. I’m kind of transitioning out of reading Young Adult novels into reading more sophisticated novels, but I still love Sarah Dessen and John Green (both are Young Adult authors). I will probably never stop reading their books as long as they continue to write no matter how old I get. While the character’s in their books deal with a lot of typical teen angst they also deal with more serious issues. I also like their writing styles.
I never could stand books like the “Gossip Girls” series. I personally don’t know how anyone can read them, but to each his own.
I don’t really read classics for pleasure. It’s not because I don’t like them. It’s just that they are kind of beating me to death with classics in school right now.
Answer by broken windowsi agree with you i’m fourteen and the only teen novels i read anymore is the princess diaries series. when ever i go in a bookstore to look at teen books they all seem so typical and boring. then i go to the adult section or the children’s section and there’s many books i want read. i guess another good teen novel is stargirl it’s about a relationship but it’s not so shallow like the one’s you mentioned above.
