How exactly does a film director start and make it in the film industry?

Alicat: How exactly does a film director start and make it in the film industry?
I understand that sometimes they start out not as directors and work the way up, but I am wondering how do you even break into the film industry, and once you are in how do you keep getting projects to work on.

there are several different means to get into the industry/profession but how u get work is based off of offers. u request and get presented with opportunities u go to a lot of banquets and network with film critics and go to events such as sundance with your films you’ve directed and offers branch from that

Breaking into the film industry is hard, and at the same time quite simple. It starts likely with you going to college for film-making. Building up a film reel and portfolio. Learning to do tech, and building contacts. Technical theatre is also good on your resume, any community theatre projects you help backstage on.

Once you complete this, you’ll find low budget films, or large project films who need a lot of people. You apply to them, and one of them will contact you for some small job. Every film needs hundreds of off-screen workers, so the likely-hood of you finding a job relatively quickly is good. It may just be a grunt or runner, but it’s in the film industry. Then, the more films and theatre venues you work in, the better your resume, the more contacts you make, the more chance you have of working your way up in positions.
