Is there a difference between illegal gambling and legal gambling?

Anthony Spilotro did business on illegal gambling. What is illegal gambling ? I know it is illegal, but what is the difference ? Why it is illegal ? What kind of illegal things are they doing?

its not illegal cause of what they were doing. its illegal because they werent allowed to gamble in the place he did business. In the US there are certain places you can gamble. everywhere else, its illegal

Just like it says its illegal because it is not regulated and is done outside of the realm of the law.

Legal gambling (think Las Vegas, casinos, etc) are authorized and follow laws that regulate what they do. A bookie on the street corner taking bets on dog fights or such, is not authorized or regulated.
Anyone running gambling which is OUTSIDE of legal places/ means is breaking the law.
