: Can NY State remove a teenager from their home?
If there is a situation where one parent is seriously ill and the other is a recovering alcoholic, can NY State step in and remove the teenager from the home? Do the parents have any say in this? What can be done to prevent this? Can the child stay with trusted friends instead?

Unfortunately if CPS is already involved there is a likely hood that the child will be removed if there is cause for concern for the child’s welfare and health. If you have been reported by someone CPS will review your case and make a determination based on the living conditions in the home. Your best option is to have a family member take care of the child till the two parents are able to recover.
