Timmy the Male Prostitute: Bike…………………..?
How would a bike work as a first vehicle? Would it really be that hard in the winter? The roads are usually plowed, and I live in an area that doesn’t get much snow.I wouldn’t mind riding in the rain that much. Don’t mock me, just explain.
I meant a motorcycle. I guess I shoulda made that a bit more clear.

Ok first off don’t sell your vehicle until you try this for a couple of months.. you may love it or may not be into it.
You have to know how to change a flat on a bike. You also need to do research on which tire set ups will be the least likely to flat and meet your needs. They make tire liners that stop thorns and other things from puncturing the tube inside. Some people also like the slime / goop that is supposed to fill the whole if a thorn punctures.
Next you need to have an understanding of what you will do about sweating. One basic method is those little lemon scented tissue wet wipes once you get to the office bathroom, then change into work clothes. The absolute best method is to have access to a shower facility but its rarely the case that people have this.
You will need to do research into safe bike locking practices. I have had a bike stolen. Lots of people have had a bike stolen. I prefer a “U” shaped lock with a cable or chain. If you are going to be locking up at the same place every day, you may be able to get away with leaving a heavy chain and lock there. Most bikes have a quick release on the front wheel or both wheel, so its important to work locks into the wheels. I always used two locks because thieves are lazy and typically (some exceptions) not going to try to defeat two locks on your bike when they could just go find a bike with one or no lock.
You need to wear a helmet. If you have ever met someone with TBI (traumatic brain injury) from a car or bike accident, its something you never want to risk.
Lastly be on top of your psychological game. Bike riding is one of the best feelings in the world. Be prepared – some people cannot handle the idea of you riding a bike. They are upset that they have weight problems, stress, and huge chunks of debt to car payments insurance repairs etc so you will run into people that are jealous and don’t even realize thats why they are acting snobby towards a bike rider.

Its my favorite site and they talk about every issue I just mentioned, from changing a tire to the great feeling riding a bike gives.
Dude try it out, it may be tiring the first week but eventually it gets easy, i love my freakin bike i take everywhere to work, to school, to my friends, to partys and best of all… no gas required.
just make sure you buy a chain lock so it doesnt get stolen, a simple one will cost you like 5 to 10 bucks and make sure you get “Slime” to put in your tires so you never have to worry about flats and your all set my man.
It more compact than a car and your not limited to just the road so your can cut through places and go over terrain a car normaly wouldnt be able to.
Give it a shot :]
Answer by itsaschwinnFind a local cycling club and ask who commutes for some tips for your climate. Some bike shops and stores like REI offer commuting clinics and bikeleague.org has a list of instructors and classes in your area. Other cyclist will be glad to help you, it’s not hard.
