: What atheistic books should I ask my Christian girlfriend to read?
She wants me to read some books by Lee Strobel and Norman Geisler. For each book I read, though, I’m allowed to ask her to read a book from the atheist point of view. Which ones should I recommend?

And don’t suggest science books or anything like that, because she already knows that stuff. Some of it better than I do.

I’m not sure what you mean by “atheistic books”. You don’t have to be an atheist to understand things like biology, cosmology, or to question the claim of a historical Jesus, etc.

If you’re looking for a book on atheism itself, I’d highly recommend “Atheism: The Case Against God” by George H. Smith. It debunks just about every theistic argument imaginable. I’m sure people are going to recommend Dawkins’ “The God Delusion”, though I think there are better books out there on the topic, including ones published decades earlier.

Since she’s suggesting Lee Strobel, then I’d recommend picking up one of the books that thoroughly debunks his work. If she’s trying to get you to read his embarrassingly inaccurate book about a historical Jesus, try “Challenging the Verdict” by Earl Doherty, and maybe his other book “The Jesus Puzzle”.

Another book I like that covers a mix of history and supernatural claims of Christianity is “The Case Against Christianity” by Michael Martin.

God is not great by Christopher Hitchens. It is easy reading and full of facts supporting his claims. It’s a great educational book and should be read by everybody.

Why would you desire to turn a person from the truth.

But, I suppose that is biblical to try and do that.

How did that work out for Adam and Eve?

Strobel and Geisler are excellent Christian apologists and it is nice to see your friend has wisdom. The wisdom that comes from the creator God of the Bible who desires all to seek HIM early.

Do they have to be Atheistic? “The Age of Reason” by Thomas Paine is a great book but not Atheistic.
It’s DEISTIC.

There are other useful books that undermine Christianity without being Atheistic. I strongly recommend “The Jesus Mysteries” by Timothy Freke & Peter Gandy, (GNOSTIC),
“The Mythmaker: Paul and the Invention of Christianity” by Hyam Maccoby (Jewish) [This book brilliantly shows Christianity is not a proper successor to Judaism but is Pagan], and “Gospel Fictions” by Randel Helms (noncommittal).

I recommend these books for YOU as well as her. You’ll love ’em!
